What is psychological therapy (or psychotherapy)?
Psychological therapy can be different things, depending on the approach used by the clinician. My approach enables me to regard therapy as:
A journey – either short or long – on which I embark with my clients. I base therapy on mutual respect and collaboration. My core principles are: empathy, openness, and transparency. I tend to believe that my clients are the experts of their lives. When we are distressed or in a dark place, we tend to see everything as black and white and we forget about all the nuances that life has to offer. My role is to help my clients consider different perspectives from which they can look at their situation.
A means to facilitate positive change. A good number of clients ask for help around a specific issue, such as anxiety or depression – and most importantly – a specific goal for therapy. This is when I use my knowledge and clinical experience to help clients overcome their distress. I have helped clients tackle a tendency to worry excessively, obsessions and compulsions, depression, health anxiety, social anxiety, panic, and phobias. I also have experience in helping people process traumatic events of their life, in a safe and judgment-free environment.
An opportunity for the client to know themselves better. How often do we get carried around by our busy routine and realise that we have not stopped to think by the end of the day? Unfortunately, this is how we operate in our modern society. Therapy will help you to slow down and reflect on past, present and future. It will be your special treat, your ‘me-time’, and a safe space where you can share your predicaments, without any reservations or any judgment on my side.
Last but not least, well-conducted therapy – no matter what theoretical approach is used – is an opportunity for growth. You will meet with a perfect stranger and I appreciate that this can feel daunting. Based on my clinical experience, it is often the therapeutic relationship, based on mutual trust, that gives clients strength and motivation to reach significant change in their life.
How long does therapy last?
There is not a straightforward answer. When I meet with a new client, one of my initial questions revolves around what they would like to achieve in therapy. This will help us have a rough idea of how long it may take. When problems are more specific, it is easier to predict the duration of therapy. When problems are more existential (i.e.: identity crises, relationship issues), it could go either way. Nevertheless, what it is important for you to know is that we will make the decision jointly, after I transparently share my professional opinion with you.
Can I talk to you before booking an appointment?
Prospective clients are welcome to contact me for a brief, informal chat before meeting for the first time. This is a good opportunity to ask questions and check with me whether I am able to help. If I feel that I cannot provide the best support, I will direct you to the most suitable professional amongst my contacts.
Do I need a GP referral to book an appointment?
No, this is the beauty of private therapy. You only need to call me, email me, or complete a contact form in the section ‘Contact me’ of this website.
